VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

mozy vmware

Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware — which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware’s official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn’t so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it’s the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware’s curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, “Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering.” He adds that the move will allow VMware to “further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities” of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don’t need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy’s service without interruption.

Survival Gear for Battling 100,000 Nerds in a Desert [Ces]

Here comes CES and it’s no cakewalk, let me tell you. It’s more often like a slow-moving mosh pit than a electronics show, so the gear we carry can mean the difference between a smooth expo experience and utter failure. More »

Powerbag introduces a ton of ways to charge just about everything

If there’s one pain we know better than any at CES, it’s the heartbreak of an empty battery. Powerbag feels our pain. The company has just launched a whole mess of ways to make sure your mobile gadgets don’t lose their ever-precious charge. At the top of the list, of course, is the new Powerbag, the company’s bread and butter. At tonight’s CES kickoff event, it was showing off a messenger bag version of the product.

Not surprisingly, this carrier doesn’t have the sort of cache of, say, a Crumpler bag. This is a big bag that charges up to four mobile devices at the same time — it looks about as dorky as you’d suspect from such a product, but when it comes to the love of your mobile devices, sometimes such vanity has to go out the window, right? Among the upgrades to the line is a slimmer battery, for charging your devices on the go — certainly a welcome change. You can pick a Powerbag up now for $140.

Also new is the myCharge Folio, an iPhone 4S case with a built-in USB cable that mimics the design of the Apple Smart Cover for the iPad and promises to double your battery life for $80. The $100 myCharge Duet also has a built-in USB cable and comes in two pieces, so you can slide off the battery, when you need the thing to be a little less bulky. The myCharge Concierge, meanwhile, is a portable charger with two USB ports for and an integrated car adapter that pops out. It’ll run you $40.

The myCharge Scout runs the same, featuring an integrated USB cord and a proprietary Apple connecter. For $60, you can pick up the myCharge Quest, which packs in a USB cord, and connecters for Apple and microUSB devices.

Facebook Adds In-Game Offers Option For All Developers, Hoping To Further Diversify Revenue

Screen Shot 2012-01-07 at 9.50.20 AMFacebook has just started letting any developer on its platform run advertising offers that pay out directly in the native currency of their games. Let’s say you’re playing Ravenskye City, a new simulation-exploration game from Lolapps, and you want to get some more of its Skye virtual currency without buying Credits. You can now take a selection of offers — signing up for a Flixster movie account, for example — just by clicking through the “Earn Skye Credits” interface. This is a big deal for many developers, because for the past year or so Facebook has restricted in-game, native curency offers to only the largest companies on the platform. That is, Zynga, EA’s Playfish, Playdom, and a few of the others who had signed on to the exclusive five-year commitment to use Facebook Credits as their exclusive virtual currency in games.

Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla’s increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs’ current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change — some URLs might change, but that’s it — and presumably Messaging’s F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user — for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users — is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year — and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs’ sleeve!

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Hybrid first hands-on!

The Lenovo X1 Hybrid isn’t your typical laptop refresh. Though it looks like the X1 we reviewed last spring, it represents a stark about-face in the company’s approach to battery life: the Hybrid edition ($1,599 and up) packs a second, low-power processor made by Qualcomm, along with a custom, lightweight OS based on Android. Said differently, the laptop falls back on smartphone internals when longevity life is paramount.

This operating system, dubbed Instant Media Mode (IMM), functions like any other instant-on environment: it boots in about two seconds, and once you’re there you can do basic things like check email, surf the web, listen to music, watch movies and browse photos. In the case of the X1 Hybrid, though, that instant-on OS also promises to double the X1′s (disappointing) battery life, bringing the runtime to a max of 10 hours.

As it happens, yours truly got to see an early version of the X1 Hybrid behind closed doors two months back. But you know what they say: pics or it didn’t happen! So here we are, giving your our first sanctioned look. If you’ve ever used an Android-based tablet, those customizations should look familiar: that launcher you see up there is the same one we played with on the IdeaPad K1 and ThinkPad Tablet. So, the browser, etc. shouldn’t be much of a surprise to those of you who have been following along. As you can see in the video past the break, loading the OS, moving into Windows 7 and launching apps within this Android-like environment is all fairly brisk, though not without a few pauses. What else can we say? It’s Android! (Sort of!) Running on a ThinkPad! But don’t take our word for it: meet us past the break for the full demo.

A Cautionary CES Tale: What Tablet Makers Can Learn From Sins Past

We were promised such great things at CES 2011. We were told the coming year would bring worthy competitors to the mass-market consumer tablet space, an arena pioneered by the iPad. Upstart vendors didn’t deliver, and here’s what they can learn from their mistakes.

Nikon Hits Another Home Run With the Video-Shooting D4

Nikon’s new flagship DSLR, the D4, has just gotten a pre-CES launch. The aging D3 has been losing its lunch to Canon for a while thanks to the rival company’s focus on video, so it’s hard to remember just how impressive the old D3 was when launched. The D4 is of course very video-centric, too, [...]
